I was first introduced to the horrendous lemon juice cayenne cleanse back in 1996. That shit killed me! The next cleansing practice I tried was with my yoga teacher, who lived in an Indian Ashram for 25 years, in 2000. It was intense needless to say.
However, a few years ago Angela, our resident health coach and writer, asked me if I'd beta test a detox she'd designed. I was hesitant at first, but I tried it. I was wiped physiologically, and needed a reset. Rejuvenation.
Today, Ang walks you quickly through the history of detox and why they're good for you. I love doing a detox in the support of a group environment, because I'm held accountable and have community support. I believe a group helps you to keep moving forward while you get your feet underneath you.
Hope you enjoy. Here's to your health and good love!
According to renowned functional medical practitioner, Dr. Mark Hyman, when your body become “toxic,” it means your natural means of ushering out metabolic waste has exceeded the threshold for what the body’s innate detoxification system can handle on its own. With this toxic load, every system in your body can become affected—toxicity makes you sick!
Cleansing has a rich tradition, throughout all ages and cultures. For thousands of years, body purification has been a part of our rituals for health and well-being. Detoxification is a necessary tool in the modern world to maintain our health.
While detoxification is a natural function of the body, the detoxification process can become stagnant when our bodies get overloaded with toxins.
Traditionally, cleansing is done once each spring and fall and focuses on fresh seasonal foods.
We often don’t consider cleaning our internal body and our minds. Cleansing gives the digestive system a rest and gives the body a chance to “catch up” on the internal cleaning process.
Types of Detoxes
The word “detox” has become so trendy (it’s as if it’s replaced the word “diet”!). There are many different kinds of detox programs out there, so how do you know which is right for you? From full-on fasts to juice cleanses to seasonal detoxes and whole foods cleanses, they all have specific benefits.
The focus should be on Basic clean eating principles which means you’ll feel lighter, brighter, and ready to conquer the world if you move through the program in the spirit of healing your body. A simple cleanse can revolutionize the way you think about food, and reshape your body from the inside out! Look for one with simple, flavorful recipes to optimize your health.
Length of a Detox
While the length of a detox can range from 1 or 2 days to 2 weeks or even a month. You need time for your body to rid itself of toxins that are slowing you down and robbing you of your vitality while rebuilding it with proper nutrients. If it’s too short and you may not derive the benefits you seek, and if it’s too long you may have a hard time sticking with it. In my experience, participants achieve the best results by carving out at least 10 days for a whole food cleanse.
How to Prep
When you undertake a detox or cleanse you should plan on giving yourself the time and space to focus on your health. This means you should clear your calendar as much as possible, resist taking on extra responsibilities at work, arrange for extra babysitting, and/or explain to your significant other that he or she may not see you as often during this time.
You’ll also want to fill your pantry and fridge with wholesome whole foods and clear out any sugary, fatty, processed foods that are devoid of nutrients and may tempt you as you move through your detox. You may also want to get a journal to record your progress and any feelings that may come up during your detox.
It’s common for people to feel WORSE before they feel better during a detox. This is sometimes referred to as a “healing crisis” or a Herxheimer Reaction, and it’s basically an immune system reaction to the toxins that are released when large amounts of pathogens are being killed off, and the body does not eliminate the toxins quickly enough
The most important thing is to stick out these out, as worsening symptoms do not indicate failure; in fact, it’s just the opposite! It indicates you are on your way to renewed health and wellness.
Even though we believe in simple and gentle cleanses, cleansing can be tough to do on your own. Join a program that is designed to give you the support you need, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
