“There are two important days in a woman's life: the day she is born and the day she finds out why.”
-Terry Tempest Williams
The other day, I was scrolling 'the gram' and saw a sweet young soul who was making her proclamation of taking a break from social media, because her soul was aching.
She's a new momma, and she's got a large following - with that comes a relationship with connection, staying engaged with your community, and giving out a part of yourself that exposes you in a very vulnerable manner.
What gave me a ton of respect was her courage to say, "Hey, I'm human. I need a break to be a mom, to take care of my soul, to enjoy summer, and hey I need some time to heal and process for my soul, for my family, for the benefit of my over wellness." How many of you can relate?
Whenever I'm working a mom who asks to go deeper, who wants to dive into her soul, energetic body, or spiritual health the first step is to teach her to ask, "What do I want?" Then learn how to listen to the quiet inner voice.
If you've been reading long enough, you've heard me mention this practice. You do have to sit down, quiet yourself enough to listen to your heart, your breath, and a deeper part of yourself that some call inner-wisdom, I just call it you. Everything you need to know about you, all right there.
But then there's this deeper thing called 'purpose'. The moment you find out why you were born, like Williams alludes to in her quote. What if you're a woman who had this clear path - career, love, life, everything you wanted and dreamed and kids were part of that dream, and then when you had them - parts of your dream morphed and changed? What if one day you asked yourself, "Who am I, now?"
That's where this little exercise (or practice) comes in beautifully. Like a gateway drug, the more you use it - the more open you become to hearing your honest truth. A deeper knowing and sense of self-awareness.
There are so many things I can write on to work with your health and your spirit, from energy to physical connection. Today, I'm going to stop here and ask you to start your practice.
Close your eyes, take some deep breaths. In your nose, out your mouth. Quiet your energy. Then put a hand on your heart, and ask, "What do I want?" Even if you know yourself a brilliantly as the sun knows the day, try it anyway.
See what more you can learn about you, now, in your new normal. Because, every day is a new day. Every week a new week. We are beginning again, all the time. And for some peculiar reason, I think asking ourselves this question regularly helps us to always remember why we were born.
Let me know, do you know your why? If so, I'd love to hear it in the comments below.
